Q: 03 Audi A4 check engine light on, rough idle- what's the problem?
I recently had all my engine coils replaced (1 month ago). Last week my car started idling rough and then the check engine light came on. I've taken it into my Audi guy and he can't figure out what is wrong. At first he thought it was related to the oil sludge problem, then thought the fuel pump was loose, but neither were the problem. He did say the computer spit out the code for the oxygen sensors, among 5 other codes that didn't make sense, so he's ordered that part just in case. I've been out of my car for a week now - any suggestions or thoughts on what could possibly be wrong?! In 4 years I've had a new fuel pump (before the recall), new oil pump (apparently NOT related to the sludge), new engine coils and now this.
A: GET A NEW "MECHANIC"!! First of all, there are no codes just for O2 sensors. No code says to replace an O2 sensor. A code can indicate poor operation of an O2, and that's why its important to view the data stream, and that requires a scan tool, not a code reader. Rough idle in your case is either due to a vacuum leak, most likely a line that's disconnected, or an EGR valve that hasn't closed all the way. It would be helpful if you listed all the codes here, but that will only tell me which systems are affected, but not why. Looking at the big picture, and remembering basic troubleshooting skills will get you headed in the right direction, and it sounds like this guy isn't able to manage that. Time to find someone who can actually diagnose a problem without waiting for the car's computer to do it for them.
** Since you didn't mention poor top end performance, you can eliminate the catalytic converter and fuel pump from your area of concern. Each of those problems become quite pronounced under load, but often have undetectable symptoms at idle.
Q: oracle lights on audi a4?
i was wondering if anyone has put oracle lights on an 06-07 model of the audi a4
or maybe a really good aftermarket parts site
A: I assume you mean Halos angle eyes like BMW's have. FK makes a bunch of them. http://www.ngpracing.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=FKFSAI021&Category_Code=a4headlight

Q: i need audi a4 buying tips
im looking to purchase a used 2001 audi a4 2.8L OR 1.8T (depending on availability) within the next couple months. i am aware of a few issues these cars have but i would like to know ALL issues. everything from deteriorating parts to faulty parts inside, underhood as well as exterior. thanks a lot! also any other buying tips would be appreciated.
A: I have a 2001 A4 with 91k miles. And though this car isn't as bad as everyone thinks it is, but its still a headache. The timing belt is very choosy and audi has sent out an extended warranty related to the timing belt. Aside from that, the engine ONLY takes synthetic, my engine blew 10k miles ago, and the dealer replaced it for me since i was on an extended warranty Aside from that I was told the the Differentials on these cars are prone to leaking (I never had this problem) and that the Electronics usually start to foul up when it goes over 100k. Theres still a huge list of stuff wrong with it, MSN autos helps, as well as forums.
Best of luck.
Q: Lexus ES330 versus Audi A4?
I am about to buy a car: a 2004 to 2006 Lexus ES330 or Audi A4 sedan. The Lexus are only FWD, while the Audis are FWD or AWD. I'm really not much of a car person, so I'm not looking for top luxury, super fast, etc. I've just never had a really nice car, and these 2 seemed to fit the bill and have great safety records, no/few recalls, etc. Which is the better quality car? Reliable, few issues / repairs, less likely to be in the shop all the time, the better value? I'm not too worried about the price of repair parts either, because both Lexus and Audi are offering 3+ yr warranties, loaner cars during repairs, etc. I'm looking only at certified cars.
A: Well - it depends what's more important to you. Sportiness/handling vs. reliability. The Audi is better in the sportiness quotient, the Lexus is better in reliability.
The Audi is more of a "driver's car" in terms of feel, handling, sportiness. If AWD is important to you, then go with the Audi. The interiors of the Audi are tasteful and one of the daily pleasures - I own one, so I know. And while the A4 in recent years has a better reliability record than in the past, they can be expensive and costly to maintain, even though their drivetrains are pretty sound. You should also consider the costs past the warranty period, because a lot of major maintenance milestones (such as replacing the timing belt, etc.) can be pretty pricey. AWD cars also are more complicated mechanically and there are more potential areas to fix.
The Lexus ES tends to have a softer ride, it's not really designed to be "driven to the limit". On the other hand, the Lexus does have a pretty good reliability record (after all, it is a Toyota under the skin) and a slower depreciation rate than the A4. It also has more interior space than the A4.
So it's really up to you. I'd suggest you drive both to compare what you like about each model, and see which tradeoff is more important to you.
Q: Lexus ES330 or Audi A4?
I am about to buy a car: a 2004 or 2006 Lexus ES330 or a 2006 Audi A4. All the ones I looked at are front-wheel drive. I'm really not much of a car person, so I'm not looking for top luxury, super fast, etc. I've just never had a really nice car, and these 2 seemed to fit the bill and have great safety records, no/few recalls, etc. Which is the better quality car? Thanks for any input.
BTW, both are certified.
A: The ES 330 may be the smoothest, quietest car in its class. It's easy to drive smoothly, keeping passengers comfortable and making the driver look like a pro. The 2006 Audi A4 is Audi's best-selling lineup offers three body styles: sedans, Avant wagons, and Cabriolet convertibles. All are available in A4 and high-performance S4 trim. It is really hard to decide between the two. Wouldn't hurt to do some more research tho. Here are some links that might be useful for you:

A: Audi A4
Q: Need some help/solutions with a serious car problems to my 2002 Audi A4 (engine is gone)?
Ok, well here I go... I found out yesterday that my 2002 Audi A4 has just hit me with the impossible situation.
2 weeks ago, the engine gave way because of engine sludge. Now we got the oil changed every 3000 miles and have all of our receipts. We bought the car 11/2005 from Beach Honda (a used purchase 40plus thousand miles) in Miami, FL. Since then we have had to replace both catalyst converters, an entire transmission, and now this. Now we got the entended warranty, and were still under it. However, they refuse to pay for the 12,500 in repairs, because they say the engine was damaged by 60% Sludge and they can void out the warranty based on sludge. I'm clueless as to what i should do next...
Problem is this, we can go to court (I have my lawyer looking over the paper work now), but thats a long process. Since we bought the car used in 11/2005 we still owe on the car, but now the car is just about only worth the parts...
What are my options here? I'm just looking for advice from as many people as I can, cause Im just stumped now... please someone anyone...give me some good advice.
RC
A: Many people have been conned into putting miracle oil addatives in with the engine oil,,and have had the same problems you have had.
Ordinary engine oil will not cause such sludge build ups as you have had.
Only addatives will cause this problem.
since you probably dont have any proof of who caused the damage(unless it was yourself) then you may have to bite the bullet,,so to speak.

there was an interior fire in the vehicle, so all prior wiring has to be replaced, everything was damaged!!, thanx
A: Hi. You need to be more specific in your discription of "an interior loom". What do you need the loom for? Is it because you had a fire or because you damaged it? Mabe you need to upgrade some accessory. Give me some more details and I will tell you what you need.
Q: Audi A4 Lower Control Arm / Link?
I took my 1997 Audi A4 to the shop today b/c there was a "groaning" noise coming from my drivers side front tire area everytime i came to a stop/hit a bump in the road. The shop told me that the bushings in my lower control arm were dry and that they had lubed it up, but that I needed to replace the lower control arm and lower control link (and also an alignment after it was all done). Any insights?
3 Questions:
1.) Is this worthwhile to do now, or do I wait and see if the lubrication does the trick?
2.) How necessary is this repair, i.e. safety-wise?
3.) How much should something like this cost? I am being quoted roughly $300 for each of the parts and then about 3.5 hours of labor.
Thanks in advance for your help!
A: The lower front control arm for this car has a dealer list of $186. The labor according to Mitchell is 1.0 hours. There is not, as far as I can tell, a lower control link (sometimes called a strut rod) on this vehicle since it has upper and lower A-arm suspension. The diagram I have for the front suspension on this car does not show one and no part number is listed for one. Perhaps they are not quoting what I think they are quoting.
Worn control arm bushings can cause significant toe movement in the front suspension which in turn can cause steering and braking problems and uneven tire wear.
Hope this helps.

Q: 2002 Audi A4 1.8 quattro HELP?
should i (18y/o) purchase a 2002 Audi A4 1.8T quattro with 76,000 miles if not why? beside the fact its too fast for me or service parts cost to much. tell me how long it might last. is it a good buy i believe this is the 4th generation of its series so they probably fix the problems they had in the past. i also herd its hard to find a mechanic to work on the car is this true?
A: if you decide to buy one, just make sure the 70,000 miles maintenance was done, which is the timing belt, water pump, pulley, thermostat, and serpentine belt. If you take it to a dealer, it costs around $1500.
Overall, it's a pretty nice vehicle. Make sure the mass air intake is good.
Q: I have a 2000 Audi A4 Quarto and my engine check light came on and these are the errors (P0421, P0431, P1423)?
What do these errors mean?
My question is that what parts do I need to buy to fix these errors?
P0421 Warm Up Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
P0431 Warm Up Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)
P1423 Sec.Air Inj.Sys.,Bank1 Flow too Low
A: most likely, the first 2 codes are caused by the condition that is triggering the third. when your secondary air is performing incorrectly, it causes your veh to run rich on startup, so the comp thinks your converters aren't operaqting correctly. my guess is that you have a 2.8l V6 from the codes. most likely, you have a torn vacuum line going to the kombi valves on the back of the heads, not allowing the secondary air pump to perform correctly. your kombi valves are aluminum cylinder looking things on the back of each head. look at the vacuum line that goes to both vlaves and try to find a leak. it's pretty common. hope that helps
Q: engine rebuilding tips please? what internal parts can i upgrade for more hp?
I have a 97 audi a4 1.8t, and i want to rebuild my engine, what parts could i replace for more hp, and and also for a smoother more relable engine?
A: everything. basically anything in the engine can be replace with high performance parts. all i would do is get the heads ported and maybe stroke the motor. remember if you start to do up the motor make sure you do up everything else. more air in means more air out, more power to the wheels means stronger gears
Q: Audi A4 Avant or Volvo V40?
I'm looking for a new car and I've owned both these before. But I had the 1997 A4 which wasn't great, and the 2000 V40 which was nicer to drive than the Audi (and more reliable).
Now apparently Audi have improved their car which should make it as nice to drive as the V40, but I haven't tried it yet (and will find it difficult as have no car at all after my V40 was written off!).
Are there any nasties anyone can tell me about the 03/04 Audi A4? Or any reason why the 03/04 V40 shouldn't be as good as the 2000?
Sorry - finding it hard to choose! For both cars I'm going for the 1.9L 115bhp diesel, I found both had similar MPG, both cost similar amounts for parts and at the moment both are almost the same price.
By the way, I DO NOT CARE what I will look like driving it or how cool the car is! I want the most economical, reliable one which will last for the next 4 years or so and still be worth something as a part ex at the end. And I'm not going to consider other models.
I'd be really grateful if anyone can tell me if the newer Audi corners without wallowing and of their experiences with these cars. Cheers.
RapdRPM - did you not notice the bit where I said I've already owned a Volvo V40? I had it for 4 years and there were no electrical faults (in fact they're not known for these, but they are known for a vaccum pump fault), no dashboard sqeaks or rattles and it was a comfortable ride on all surfaces, more so than the 1997 Audi. I replaced only an air hose in 4 years and when it was written off it had done 135,000 miles.
You sound like you're quoting the faults of a very early V40 from a review.
And I did say I was only looking at the 1.9 diesels.
And Pegasus - not only bad drivers use a Volvo tank. They're useful if you want to walk away from an accident after being hit by a 4x4 (and the V40s are only little).
A: Tough call.
I can think of no reason to sway you from your preference of Volvo as the cars are so similar in specification.
You have a better impression of Volvo than Audi so go with your gut instinct.
The only comment I would make is that you might find it easier to sell an 8 year old Audi than the Volvo... not that you will realise much money for either of them.
